We need to rehome our Karelian Bear Dog (KBD), Thea. She is a beautiful 3 1/2 year old KBD. She is fun, spunky, sweet, funny, loving and playful! We have had her for about 7 months and love her very much. The original owner had her since she was a puppy and only had to rehome her because she was knocking down the little ones while they were learning to walk, just wanting to play with them. She is very smart and is food motivated.
She warmed to us immediately. She knows “sit” and “lay down” and sometimes “stay”. We have 20 acres where she loves to run freely! She comes back every 10 minutes or so to check in. Usually she stays right around the house with us.
She does well with our cats, but occasionally gives them a quick chase. Never to cause harm though.
She grew up with another dog and we have gradually got her used to a few more dogs that belong to friends. Her first reaction to other dogs is to go after them (mostly to scare them), but if she is properly introduced she will be a playful friend!
She goes to work with my husband (construction) where she has to be tied up so she ends up barking at squirrels, birds, other dogs, etc out of boredom which isn’t conducive to in-town work. She doesn’t bark much when she’s at our home (only when she gets a squirrel up a tree, etc!).
This summer during a hot spell when being tied up and children trying to play with her, she can got grumpy (KBD’s are meant for cold weather) So, we let the kids know not to get in her face, etc.
She is very protective of her surroundings, whether it be the house, the pickup or our camper when we’re at a campground. I appreciate her for that. I always feel safe.
Unfortunately, as much as we adore her, she has a bit too much energy for our lifestyle. She needs to be active more often than just when she gets home in the evenings. She was bred to bark and corner prey for hunters, so that’s what she wants to do!
Please research the breed before you contact us as we want you to know exactly how to give her what she needs and be aware of the proper expectations. (Us included.) There are some large social media groups who enjoy every moment with these precious dogs and we hope you can be one of those people as well! We just want Thea to have the thriving life style she deserves. Low cost spay and neuter vouchers are available at the shelter. Call 208 265 7297 ext 100 for information.
